I don’t travel as often as I’d like, but when I do, I’ve noticed that you can usually tell where someone is from just by how they are dressed. While waiting on a plane, I was watching people arrive, and instantly knew who was coming in from San Francisco, Portland and JFK. Another thing I’ve noticed at the airport and out of the airport is that there is a group of women in the world who are effortlessly cool.
They’ve been in my life from the beginning. Those girls in high school who came to school with perfect hair and perfect clothes… I’ve never been one of those girls. I am the living cliche who went to high school with giant glasses and braces along with a super cute older sister whom everyone came over just to hang out with. As I’ve grown up, I’ve learned to embrace my style. The glasses were replaced with contacts and the braces came off. In another Hollywood cliche, I actually grew up into someone cute. But I lack the confidence that it takes to be effortlessly cool.
I am fabulous at picking clothes for other people. I like to put outfits together, but I feel like when it comes to my own style, I’m always getting it wrong. Maybe it’s because my style icons look nothing like me. In my mind, I’m 5’11 with a perfect booty and the washboard abs I sported in college. In reality, I’m 5’4 with a short torso and look horrible in anything with a high waist.
But the effortless girls come in all shapes and sizes. Being cool isn’t about being perfect or looking like a super model. It’s about knowing what you like and what you feel comfortable in and working it. The one accessory that every cool woman possesses is confidence. It’s obvious when you put on that one dress that makes you feel super sexy. Your smile widens and your eyes brighten because you know you look good. The trick is finding things that evoke that feeling every day.
